From Two to Four: Our Journey to Building a Family Through Adoption
We’d always known we wanted to adopt, as two women it seems the perfect fit for us to bring two children into our home and create our family. We commenced the adoption process during covid which seemed like a real light to look towards. The early days of the process with Scottish Adoption and Fostering, prep class and home study, was really interesting. We learned so much about each other, discussed how we wanted to parent and thought about what our children might need to feel safe, secure and loved. Some of our friends were pregnant at the time we were going through home study, when we explained the process, they thought it should be for every parent, not just those who were going through adoption!
A few months later we matched with our two beautiful children, we met them pretty quickly and excitedly we brought them home. Home to their forever home. We had gone from no children to two children under 4 years and it was a super busy time. Our social worker was incredible, supportive, kind and nonjudgemental. She was a great listener and helped us learn to understand our children. Our main memories from the early days are bubble baths, cake and custard and bedtime stories. That and tiredness like I’ve never felt before and the primal need to keep these two beautiful children safe.
We are now three years along on our journey and as with every family there is a real mix of pride, laughter and ‘oh that wasn’t what I was expecting’ moments. We still receive support from Scottish Adoption and Fostering, we are grateful that this continues and adapts along the children’s lives. Our children bring with them their trauma, their experience and their fear. As therapeutic parents we try our best to meet them where they are, guide them through the tough times and show unwavering love. They have come such a long way in three years, and we are incredibly proud of them both, life is so much better having them with us. Adoption was the right decision for us, and I hope it will be for you too.
